Aftershock - Through The Looking Glass

Goodlife, 1998, CD, Vinyl

This is another good record from '98. Another American metalcore type sounding band. Another Goodlife classic.
I think it's a concept album based on Through The Looking Glass of Alice In Wonderland.
The overall sound is very heavy even for metalcore standards. The crushing rhythms really shake the room if you put it on loud.
The vocals are exceptionally heavy also, like just very very dark and gruff... as much as anything I have heard. It does have melody though interwoven through it.
Occasional leaf riffs give way to softer more epic passages of instrumentation and of classic metal stylings as well as the occasional solo flourish.
So there were so many metalcore bands once we got into the 2000s but for 1998 this was a real buldozer. Even now in 2013 I listen this and it doesn't sound dated to me. The production was very good for the releases on Goodlife.
What has happened since then is that although the bands may be more polished or technical, the whole scene has been awash with inauthenticity and insincerity and an overall
dilution in true artistic and spiritual expression. So really I couldn't give a shit about half of these newer bands and I still listen to this and other Goodlife records from the 90s quite often.
