Caliban - Shadow Hearts

Lifeforce, 2003, CD, Vinyl

This was never a band I listened to much back at the time they released this. I heard some tracks but amongst all the other metalcore I never had any of their records.

I'm not sure I like it. Although it has all the elements it doesn't really work for me with the singing. All those dreadful bands that spawned after about 2003 just put me off anything like this now where there is some singing along with the usual brutality. I liked the spoken word parts from bands like Undying and Strongarm but this business where someone sings like in these As I Lay Dying type bands... I'm not sure. Most of the bands I used to see at shows didn't have anyone who could sing.

Is it quite a good record though in this, what was by now, 2nd wave metalcore. They have some well-made songs and some brutal beatdowns and the screamed vocals which are there over most of the tracks are pretty good. The structure of the songs is more straight-forward than some of these more chaotic bands and you can see how this became the latest big style in metal. It got them a deal on Roadrunner anyway.
