Old Man Gloom - Meditations In B

Tortuga, 2000, CD, Vinyl, Various coloured, limited vinyl

Members of Converge, Isis and Cave In create a real behemoth of a concoction. Like a more sickened twisted version of Isis. The sound is heavier and noisier overall, with the vocals like some hellpit inferno, thick with distortion. Whereas Isis like to build up songs over a few minutes with layers and repetitions, here its more immediate with a lot of the pieces between 1 and 2 minutes. It emanates this sound of a giant machine getting into gear, ramping up. The regular tracks are mixed in with noise or ambient pieces that add to the eerie and post-apocalyptic feel to it. It really is quite good though, it's not just something where they thought that their regular bands rule and so they can just dump out any old shit on coloured vinyl - it's a serious musical project that fans of Isis and Converge will appreciate and enjoy along with other fans of sludge, doom and noise metal.
