Renee Heartfelt - Mary Magdalene

Textbook Music, 2005, CD

Ex-members of Count Me Out, Give Up The Ghost and Striking Distance produce something here than is quite unlike their other bands.

It's been described as post-hardcore when I read about it, but I'm not sure about that term even though I will add it to the keywords here. When I listen to it, I hear a more dense and complicated Samiam with these soaring, melancholic verses and low-key choruses with resigned, washed-up vocals.

The sound is really quite good and songs
accomplished, it's really nice to listen to... it's not some messy shambolic, noisy type band that sometimes ends up being described by terms like "post-hardcore" and "emo". It gives the impression that they know what they are doing and not just messing about with some style or other trying to re-create this or that sound. You could do a lot worse than this.
