Hopesfall - The Satellite Years

Trustkill, 2002, CD

Before all these shitty bands brought this style into the mainstream and started calling it emo and screamo there were bands like Hopesfall and Poison The Well. I'm talking about in my culture, in the UK. I don't know about in the US, probably they were big there already and everyone was sick of them. If you like that style of music though, with the heavy downtuned guitars, metallic riffs and melodies, and where one guy sings and then another guy screams, then this is one of the best records in that genre. The first track, Andromeda, which is a rousing instrumental, makes you think that greatness might be on the horizon. They reach the stars almost at times with the rest of the record with loud quiet parts, distorted heavy chugging riffs and then clean guitars, blazing melodies and harmonies. They have quite a refined sound, it's not nasty and crusty or DIY produced or anything. The singer screams like a sick dog and then sings like a romantic. I don't know what he's singing about, probably girls or the cosmos I hope. In this style, I'm trying hard to think of any other bands that do this better... I guess Poison The Well like I say, From Autumn To Ashes, Shai Hulud, Grade.
