Embrace - s/t

Dischord, 1987, CD, Vinyl, remastered versions

Maybe this was the first "emo" or "emocore" record according to some sources, but singer Ian MacKaye who played in this short-lived band would often refute this. It's very interesting to hear now for any fans of this style or for fans of Minor Threat and Ian Mackaye's later bands. it's a much softer sounding band than Minor Threat, sounding much more like a new wave or pop band with much less agressive vocals than MacKaye had contributed previously. You can still hear the distinctive Mackaye sound and the passion and energy of protest in his voice. The songs are quite nice melodic rock constructions, less off-kilter than his later work in Fugazi. Worth checking out.
