Converge - Caring And Killing

Hydra Head, 1995, CD, Vinyl

Once in 98 or 99 we went to see Converge. Hardly anyone there and some nasty, bad metal bands playing as support. It got late at the venue before they came on and we had to leave, but then we saw that the train was delayed and so we ran back to the venue in the rain. Just a handful of kids in Coal Chamber hooded tops prancing about on the floor while the band blasted out the best thing we had ever seen or heard at that point in time. Can you imagine that? In a big city in the UK. This was before Jane Doe of course, but still.

I used to listen to "I Abstain" the second track a lot when I first got this collection of songs. Really this record is worth getting just for that. It's sublime. The rest of it is a collection of early metalcore that fans of the band will appreciate but which may not attract new fans. The quality varies but you get this feel to it all that makes you think they were onto some good shit.
